Introduced in 1972 to compete with the Boeing 747 and Douglas DC-10 the Lockheed L-1011 is a three engined widebody airliner that is quieter and more efficient than its competitors. Although Lockheed sold 250 models of the aircraft as well as a few more military TriStar variants the L-1011 was financially a failure and Lockheed has since backed out of the commercial aircraft business.
