Originally designed to meet United States Navy specifications for a single-seat bomber in World War II the A-1 Skyraider proved to be an aircraft much more versatile than required and it enjoyed a very long service life. The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was among the largest aircraft of World War II. It saw limited service during that war being introduced in mid-1944. It was however the primary heavy bomber in the Pacific from its introduction until the end of the war after two B-29s dropped the first atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The B-29 continued to see combat after World War II still being the primary heavy bomber during the Korean War. XB-70 Valkyrie

The XB-70 program is one of the most iconic Cold War test programs and is possibly one of the most well-known military test programs in history. With its futuristic almost science-fiction shape and promising Mach 3 speed the XB-70 was very near to full-scale production when the project was canceled. As surface-to-air missiles improved in the late 1950s the decision was made to halt the B-70 program that the XB-70 was prototyping. The 314s called "Clippers" were among the largest aircraft of their time and built for luxury. Only wealthy patrons could afford to travel on Pan Am's big "Clippers" and only the best crews were chosen to fly them. Pan Am operated the 314s for only three years the aircraft being pressed into necessary military service upon America's entrance into World War II in 1942. Because of the skill and experience displayed by the original crews Pan Am pilots and flight crews continued to man the "Clippers" and the big planes were used in both resupply efforts and as executive transports for both Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt. Authentic Models Jenny JN-7H Barnstormer Model Airplane

Here is the model of a plane that made the transition from a military use to the private sector and had an impact on the entire country. The fleet of Curtiss Jenny airplanes were used primarily as training aircraft or relegated to reconnaissance missions in the later years of World War I. Featuring engines of about 90 horsepower they were used to train pilots for gunnery and bombing runs. Many of the planes were upgraded with 180 horsepower engines in the mid-1920s. In the late 20s many of these planes were sold quite inexpensively on the civilian market. They were often used to transport mail but their most famous use was in early air shows and barnstorming. G4M3 Betty

Code-named "Betty" by Allied forces the G4M was the primary land-based bomber for the Japanese Navy in World War II often being used in torpedo attacks. Since it was designed with range and speed as priorities several survivability measures were left out of the design particularly self-sealing fuel tanks (a problem that Japanese Zero's also had). Combined with the simplistic flight patterns of a torpedo attack the G4M made a very easy target and was derisively called 'lighter' or 'cigar' by both Allied and Japanese pilots.The G4M did have several good qualities despite its flaws including good speed and 20mm cannons for defensive armament much heavier and more dangerous than the .50 caliber machine guns carried by similar Allied aircraft. In cases where the Betty did not catch fire it proved a very sturdy airframe able to return to base despite heavy battle damage. Later in the war the G4M began to carry the Okha to battle a rocket-propelled kamikaze aircraft.Reproduced here is the G4M3 variant with dramatically increased survivability and defensive armament but less than a hundred examples built. C-119G Flying Boxcar

Dubbed the Flying Boxcar the Fairchild C-119 was introduced in 1949 as a redesign of the C-82 Packet an earlier Fairchild design that saw limited use in World War II. The C-119 was given the nickname of the Flying Boxcar thanks to its unusual appearance and good cargo capacity. Nearly 1200 were built including 71 by Kaiser-Frazer and later variants utilized jet engines for propulsion. The Flying Boxcars saw service in a variety of areas including major transport duties in the Korean War and several mid-air retrieval missions of spy satellites in the early parts of the Cold War. The Boxcar was also used in Vietnam both as a cargo plane and an aerial gunship. As the aircraft was retired out of service it was sold to the militaries of several nations as part of the Military Assistance Program and some civilian interests. Two of the aircraft are still operational today flying supplies to towns in Alaska without road access. After combat experience in Vietnam revealed the vulnerability of aircraft to ground based defenses the U.S. military and contractors began work on the F-117 Nighthawk. Originally a top-secret black project the F-117 was developed by Lockheed's famous Skunk Works and represented explorations into aircraft design. Eventually the aircraft known as the Nighthawk was produced and entered service with American forces.While still classified the F-117 performed a series of combat missions in Panama and flew a massive number of sorties during Operation Desert Storm. The F-117 was declassified in 1992 and was operational until 2008 with only one combat loss. The Grumman F6F Hellcat was designed to replace the aging F4F Wildcat the U.S. Navy's primary fighter at America's entrance into World War II.
