The Grumman F6F Hellcat was designed to replace the aging F4F Wildcat the U.S. Navy`s primary fighter at America`s entrance into World War II. Details from combat engagements between the F4F and the Japanese A6M Zero were sent back to Grumman who use d the data to alter the F6F into an aircraft that was almost universally superior to the Zero.
