Originally intended to be a World War II military transport the Douglas DC-6 was not finished in time for the war so the design was changed to make the aircraft an option for civilian transport and airliner duties. Produced in both cargo and passeng er variants the DC-6 was well received by the civilian market and the U.S. Military ordered the aircraft for transport duties after the outbreak of the Korean War.
